The 3 Levels Of Chimney Inspection

We follow the CSIA's recommendations on the 3 levels of chimney inspection.

A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service technician should examine the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and portions of the appliance and chimney connection. The service technician will be looking for the chimney structure and flue's basic soundness, along with the basic appliance installation and connections. Also, to make sure that the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.
A Level 2 inspection is required when changes are made to the system. These changes may include the fuel type, the shape or material in the lining, or the replacement of an appliance with a different input rating or efficiency. Also, a level 2 inspection is required upon the sale or transfer of property or after a malfunction or event that may have caused damage to the chimney. This inspection can include a visual inspection by video scanning to examine the internal surfaces and joints of all flue liners within the chimney.
A Level 3 inspection includes all of the areas and components checked in Levels 1 and 2 and can involve removing certain building items or chimneys when necessary. The removal of components like a chimney crown, for example, shall only be required when necessary to gain access to the areas that are needed for the inspection.
